It may take some time for me to brush off the dust, but we’ll be flying along soon enough. First things first – congrats to the Colorado Rapids and my old teammates Drew Moor and Matt Pickens on their first MLS Cup Championship. I couldn’t be happier to see them both win the championship. As long as I’ve known them, they’ve been nothing but hard-working, committed athletes. But who would’ve guessed that Colorado would be playing Dallas in the final? Dallas hadn’t reached the playoffs since 2007 and Colorado’s last appearance was in 2006 and neither had ever won an MLS Cup. I love seeing untraditional match-ups like that, as do the team’s supporters who have stuck by those teams through the years. However, from the league’s point of view, it’s probably not the most desirable result to have two teams playing in the league final whose 2010 home attendance averages were 12th and 14th in the MLS out of 16 teams. Teams from all over the world in all kinds of leagues start their seasons with, at most, a slight glimmer of hope that they could lift the trophy at the competition’s end. Yet every team in MLS should have a legitimate chance to reach the ultimate goal of winning the Cup each season barring catastrophe. Is that a good or bad thing for a league, its fans or the players?

Is parity in pro sports such a bad thing? The EPL seems to have a bit of parity this year, and for me it will lead to a much more exciting season. Instead of just watching when the top 4 teams play each other, casual fans may be more interested in watching games that involve the less-notable EPL clubs. And hopefully a more competitive season will lead to a more exciting finish to the season instead of just worrying about a few Champions League spots or who may get relegated. So is it more exciting to watch a few teams per league who are expected to win and/or dominate their competition or watch a league where each individual fan truly believes that his team has a chance each year to win the championship?

Isn’t the pursuit of perfection attractive to all fans? What season sticks out to most NBA fans over the last 20 seasons? Are you thinking of the ’94-’95 season when Michael Jordan returned from baseball to help the Bulls win another championship by winning 87 of 100 games that year? That’s the season that comes to mind for me and it’s because of that team’s ability to come so close to perfection. It’s inspiring to see a group of individuals work together in such a way that their competition can only help but watch and admire. Depending on your age, you could be thinking of a number of teams right now that have pushed close to perfection: The Cowboys from the ’90′s, the Lakers from the ’80′s, the Yankees over the past 15 years, the Spurs, Patriots or Lakers of the last decade, the Oilers from the late ’80′s or D.C. United from the late ’90′s. Are those seasons where individual teams were dominant the most memorable to the majority of fans?

I’d read back over that to see if it makes as little sense as it felt like it did while I was writing, but my mind is shutting down. I don’t remember writing being this strenuous…

MLS fans, don’t forget about the expansion draft tomorrow afternoon for the two new teams in MLS for the 2011 season in Vancouver and Portland. Tar Heel fans – UNC vs. UNC-Asheville tonight at 7:00. Flyer fans – UD vs. Florida A&M Wednesday at 7:00.

Chris
